Wave-Gotik Treffen 2010 - Day 1:
Conjure One
@ Agra Hall [Leipzig, Saxony (Germany)]

Conjure One started a few minutes late due to some technical difficulties with Rhys Fulber's keyboard. This gave the photographers a great opportunity to point our cameras at the setlists on the other side of the monitors. Once the problem was fixed, he exited the stage; the show began a minute later. Unfortunately, the lack of sound wasn't the only issue they had to deal with. Several times during the set, the audience was greeted with plenty of feedback from the microphone. It took a while for this issue to be resolved.

The set was a very even mix, alternating between old, new, and forthcoming songs. I cannot find any information on their opening track called "Distance". I can only assume it will be on the new album, "Exilarch", this autumn. It, along with the two other new songs should please fans of Conjure One. They stay true to their blend of electronic music which is downtempo with a hint of Middle Eastern influence. The other new songs were called "I Dream In Colour", single available June 29, 2010 and "Run For Cover".

Overall, the performance wavered between decent and lackluster. Most of the songs didn't sound too (musically) different from the albums. I could have been home listening to the albums on my headphones and heard nearly the same thing. When I go to a show I want to hear the songs performed in their own way because it's a different experience. One example is the song "Premonition". The album has male vocals. Hearing it live with female vocals was a far greater experience than the original. There just weren't enough moments like this during the show. No one performed poorly, but no one really stood out either.

The drummer was in the back corner in his own world. He did his part well and seemed to be enjoying his role. Rhys was on the other side of the stage in the front. At times he appeared bored or like he was concentrating really hard on hearing the sound coming out of the monitors. I guess I can't blame him since there were sound problems at the beginning. The singer, Free Dominguez of the Kidneythieves, was the center of attention. She was very energetic and charismatic; however, it would've been nice if she left the center stage area once in a while to have some interaction with the audience in the wings. Also, some of the higher notes seemed to be flattened as her vocal range may not have been as large as some of the other guest vocalists on the studio works. That said, her singing was excellent in "I Dream In Colour", "Sleep", "Premonition", and "Center Of The Sun".

Setlist:
Distance
Endless Dream
I Dream In Colour
Sleep
Extraordinary Way
Premonition
Pilgrimage
Run For Cover
Forever Lost
Center Of The Sun
Tears From The Moon
