Kinetik Festival 2010 - Phase 2:
Leæther Strip, Tyske Ludder, Imperative Reaction, 16 Volt
@ Usine C [Montreal, Quebec (Canada)]

I was rather ambivalent about most of the bands this day except for Alter Der Ruine, Leæther Strip, and Vomito Negro. I had to work during the day so that meant missing Alter Der Ruine. I tried to time my work schedule so I would be able to get there during Imperative Reaction. I did not know that the festival was running two hours late.

When I arrived, 16 Volt was still playing. I never liked their crappy brand of industrial. It seems that in the course of 15 years, my tastes still say "NO!" Their blend of rock/guitar industrial was generic as ever. I will say that musically, they sounded good as a band. People who like their music probably enjoyed the show. I snapped a few pictures during three songs before taking off to find friends.

Unfortunately, I was socializing too long and missed the entire T-Faktor set.

Imperative Reaction was up next. I was very impressed with their first two albums, but they really lost me after that. Their set sounded more alterna-rock than industrial. The singer spent too much time trying to get the audience to look at him. I bailed after half their set. Yawn.

The only act I saw that evening worth any praise was Tyske Ludder. I did not know they had 2 singers. They came out in their military gear to sing along to some hard EBM. Think Funker Vogt before they turned into a bunch of pussies post-Maschine Zeit and basically glorified their side-projects - Fictional and Ravenous. I do not own most of Tyske Ludder's albums, so I cannot comment on whether they played their hits or really old material from the 90s when EBM meant EBM and not this new rehash of EBM. They did play rather dancey songs that the audience was very into. Rather than show War World II videos, Tyske Ludder was more progressive and showed videos of recent political strife within the last decade. Kudos to them for sticking up for industrial + recent politics.

I have loved Leæther Strip since 1994 and was really bummed I could not go to the Powerstrip festival in 2009. My sixteen year wait was met with crushing disappointment! I entered the hall during the first song - Adrenalin Rush - my favorite Leæther Strip song. The sound was so weak that it sounded like a CD was being played on low volume. I glanced at the stage to see Claus Larsen all alone up there.

The lackluster performance and sound of the opening song did not bode well. I do not remember the exact order of songs, but I'll say that listening to him try to sing Evil Speaks was abysmal. He was doubling over to scream into the microphone like a fucking geriatric guy huffing and puffing every few words. "Walking through the broken glass" * huff huff* "You know that your feet will bleed" *huff huff* It was so sad. He also debuted an upcoming song which I think was "The Bears Aren't Sleeping Tonight". Again, I was not impressed. The only saving grace was Japanese Bodies. Musically it sounded awesome even if the vocals were only marginally acceptable. The final song I stayed for was "Strap Me Down". It suffered the same fate as "Evil Speaks". It hurt so much that I left to go sleep as I had to work the following day and the festival was already running so late.

Anyone who thought this performance was remotely good needs to get their head checked or smashed with a warhammer. Leæther Strip played at Wave-Gotik Treffen the next weekend. I stayed far away from that show, but people who went really loved it. I suspect they should have their heads checked/smashed as well.

I missed Vomito Negro, but I heard they played four songs before the venue pulled the plug. Caustic was bumped and may have played early the next day.
